The principal solicitor, Ruth Reader, has been practising law for many years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and LLB degrees from the University of Western Australia. Ruth has gained experience from working in organisations such as Legal Aid WA, Women’s Legal Service of WA, Aboriginal Legal Service and Fair Trading WA.
Ruth started the firm Reader Lawyers & Mediators in January 2007 as a sole practitioner. Since that time the firm and its reputation have grown considerably.
In addition to her extensive family law experience, Ruth brings a wealth of life experiences to the firm having worked as a camp manager in Telfer as well as working on large civil engineering projects in NSW and WA. Ruth has also travelled extensively overseas including living in New Zealand and Italy for extended periods and raising her own two children.
Not only does Ruth have experience working in all areas of family law with clients from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, she has also worked with adults and children who have been exposed to substance abuse, mental health issues and family violence.
Ruth has extensive practical experience in the Perth Children’s Court, Perth Family Court and numerous regional and circuit courts. She is a skilled advocate in court proceedings and an accomplished negotiator. Ruth is also a nationally accredited Independent Children’s Lawyer and Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.
Ruth is a committee member of the Family Dispute Resolution Special Interest Group (FDR SIG), WA Chapter.

Kate graduated from Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia in 2007 with a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology. She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 2009. Kate has practised in the areas of commercial litigation and family law and, having worked in regional WA, is experienced in the workings of the Family Court and the Children’s Court in Perth and in country Western Australia.
Since joining Reader Lawyers & Mediators in 2010 Kate has become an integral part of our team. Kate is a nationally accredited Independent Children’s Lawyer and has extensive experience in all aspects of family law including complex disputes involving children, allegations of child abuse, family violence, representation in dispute resolution and matrimonial and de facto property matters. Kate is an experienced advocate, regularly appearing in the Family Court, Children’s Court and Magistrates Court, and provides representation at trial. Kate’s attention to detail, thoroughness and realistic advice are assets that consistently contribute to excellent results for her clients.
With a strong sense of social justice, Kate is committed to providing quality legal advice and representation to clients from all social backgrounds including providing legal assistance to Legal Aid clients.
Carrie was first admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand in 2009 after graduating from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Science. Carrie then practised in New Zealand in the areas of family law, residential property transactions, wills, administration of estates and civil litigation.
Since relocating to Perth and joining Reader Lawyers & Mediators in 2012, Carrie has focused on family law and developed extensive knowledge and experience in all areas of Australian family law including acting in complex disputes relating to children, matters involving allegations of child abuse, family violence and mental health issues and matrimonial and de facto property matters.
Carrie is a nationally accredited Independent Children’s Lawyer. She regularly appears in the Family Court, Children’s Court and Magistrates Court and provides representation in mediations and dispute resolution.
Having practised family law in New Zealand, Carrie is uniquely placed to assist in cross-jurisdictional issues like relocation and travelling with children to and from New Zealand.
Carrie’s strong client focus and conscientious work ethic are a valuable addition to the firm and her clients.
Mike graduated from Murdoch University with a Juris Doctor and joined Reader Lawyers & Mediators as a solicitor in 2013.
Since his graduation from University Mike has worked solely in family law and has gained extensive experience in complex parenting disputes, care and protection matters, violence restraining order proceedings and matrimonial and de facto property settlements. Mike regularly appears in the Family Court, Children’s Court and Magistrates Court.
Mike enjoys working closely with clients to ensure that their matter runs smoothly and that the very best outcome is achieved regardless of whether the matter settles or proceeds to litigation. Mike was an engineer for 25 years before becoming a lawyer and this experience adds a unique perspective to his work in these areas.
Mike’s calm and logical demeanour is an asset to his role as a family lawyer and we are very happy to have him as part of the team.
Rachel graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Laws with Distinction.
In June 2014 Rachel joined Reader Lawyers & Mediators as a Law Clerk and Paralegal and assisted our solicitors in all areas of Family Law.
Rachel previously worked with Legal Aid WA and Legal Aid NSW as a Paralegal/Clerk for 6 years in a variety of roles including providing advice and information to clients, assessing applications for Legal Aid and assisting in the management and development of specialist programs and policies.
In August 2015 Rachel was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia and joined us as a solicitor. She regularly appears in the Family Court, Children’s Court and Magistrates Court and has experience in all aspects of Family Law including, complex parenting disputes, property settlements, violence restraining order proceedings and care and protection matters.
Hayley and Nicola provide secretarial and administrative support to our team of solicitors. Both have extensive experience working as legal assistants and have a good understanding of the family law sector.
As our support staff, they play an integral role in ensuring your matter progresses efficiently and they are valued members of our team.
Sam and Reece joined Reader Lawyers & Mediators as Law Clerks in 2016 and provide support to our solicitors. Both are currently completing their Bachelor of Laws and their theoretical knowledge and research skills make them very useful members of our team.
Where there are Family Court or Children’s Court proceedings involving children the Court may appoint a lawyer for the child, particularly in cases that involve high conflict, concerns for the safety of the child or complex matters.
On our staff we have nationally accredited Independent Children’s Lawyers and have extensive experience representing the interests of children in the Family Court and Children’s Court.
